Why Your Electric Step Isn't Retracting (And How to Fix It)

It’s a common nightmare: you pull out of your driveway, and you hear that dreaded clunk or realize your electric running board is still fully deployed. Not only does it look odd, but it’s also a safety hazard and prone to damage from high curbs or road debris.

If your power step won't retract, don't rush to the mechanic just yet. Here are the most likely culprits and the step-by-step fixes.

1. The "Safety Stop" (Anti-Pinch) is Triggered

Most modern retractable side steps are equipped with an anti-pinch safety mechanism. If the system senses even slight resistance, it stops moving to prevent injury or damage.

• The Cause: Accumulated mud, ice, or even a small pebble wedged in the linkage.

• The Fix: Inspect the hinges and the gap between the board and the vehicle body. Use a pressure washer to clear out any debris. Once clean, try manually nudging the board while someone closes the door to "help" it complete its cycle.

2. Lack of Lubrication (The #1 Killer)

Because these steps are under the vehicle, they are constantly bombarded by rain, salt, and dirt. This leads to friction that the motor can't overcome.

• The Cause: Dry or rusted pivot points.
